Ever found yourself staring at a quest marker, wondering how to even unlock it? In Where Winds Meet's version 1.2 update, the new Supreme Freedom campaign hides behind the quest Gambit Beneath the Shimmer. It's a wild ride through puzzles, a chase, and a brutal boss fight. Ready to dive in? Let's get you prepared.
First, you need to meet three requirements. Complete the Kaifeng Hianghu Legacy: Volume II: Shadows in Bloom, finish the Kaifeng Main Chapter: Furnace of Heaven and Earth, and hit 6,000 Kaifeng exploration progress. That's a lot, but here's how to speed it up.
Shadows in Bloom is a Lost Chapter Quest you can pick up in Kaifeng. Fast travel to the Velvet Shade boundary stone and head to the nearby boats to trigger the cutscene. The quest involves investigation and minigames—use the "View Clue" panel action under your tracked quest for hints.
Furnace of Heaven and Earth (also called Furnace of Righteousness) is the three-part final quest of Chapter 2: Universal Furnace. Check your quest log's "Main Story" section to confirm you've done it.
For exploration progress, aim for level 5. Quick ways to earn it: Boundary stones give 50, Divinecraft Dungeons give 50+, Meow Meow puzzles give 30, and some Outposts give 20+.
Once you've met the prerequisites, you'll get a letter from "The Masterminds." Open your menu and select the "Letter" tab to find it. Then head to the Velvet Shade boundary stone in Kaifeng and travel north to Revelry Hall—it's mysteriously empty.
Inside, a cutscene introduces a character only known as "What?!" He taunts you and tells you to explore. Follow the quest marker to your right, where a chessboard and figurine await. Pick up the figurine, place it on the board, and play a short game. Win or lose, you'll take the figurine to the next challenge.
Place the figurine on a stand, then turn it to align its shadow with a blank space on a canvas ahead. This triggers a cutscene where story characters move as chess pieces. You'll make choices, but the outcome is the same.
Repeat this pattern four times: chess game, silhouette puzzle, cutscene. The chess games introduce new pieces, and the silhouettes get trickier, involving distance. Along the way, collect ten Shimmer's Notes on the ground. They're part of the Book of the Ember of East—archive them all for your Compendium. The only tricky one is Shimmer's Note VI, on the top-left corner of the third silhouette puzzle. Use Celestial Sieze to grab it.
After the final silhouette, you'll land on a street and chase the Shimmer of South while dodging masked interlopers. Deflect and dodge through them, triggering executions at the end of each segment. At the road's end, you'll earn the achievement "Breaking the Phalanx" (worth five Echo Jades).
The Mastermind escapes up the furnace, leading to a platform where you face the Golden Dragon's Iron Rain. This brief battle has two phases: first, deflect waves of fire to charge Blade Momentum. Second, use that momentum to reflect the dragon's fire attacks, damaging it until it self-destructs. Then, dodge beams of fire from two heads until the timer expires. You'll get the achievement "Scorched but Standing."
After that, you'll land near a Hero's Tomb where you can join or host co-op. Highly recommended—it'll help with the upcoming boss.
Finally, you face the Shimmer of South, an inky edifice of familiar bosses, but deadlier. Co-op is a game-changer here, even one ally helps split the boss's attention. Bring a healing weapon—this fight is long, and you'll burn through Medicine. The Panacea Fan's passive area healing is your best bet. Also, stay close; the Dao Lord punishes distance.
