Kingdom Hearts Movie? Disney Exec Says 'Nothing Is Impossible'

Ever dreamed of seeing Sora and friends on the big screen? With Kingdom Hearts hitting a massive $1 billion in sales and a TV show already in the works for Disney+, a movie might not be as far-fetched as you think.

IGN recently asked Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush about the possibility of a Kingdom Hearts movie. Bush didn't spill any secrets, but he didn't shut the door either. "Nothing is impossible," he said, adding, "I am always excited to hear what people are passionate about. And I'd say we have a very bright future of new projects coming out. Different ways of putting material out into the world."

Bush knows a thing or two about hits. He co-wrote and co-directed Zootopia and its sequel, both massive successes. He also co-directed Encanto (which snagged him an Oscar) and wrote the screenplay for Moana. So when he talks about a bright future, you listen.

This isn't the first time Kingdom Hearts has flirted with the screen. Back in 2002, filmmaker Seth Kearsley actually created a pilot for an animated TV show. He posted an early animatic online, but it's been removed since. And here's a fun fact: the franchise was originally greenlit by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who recently admitted he has zero memory of approving it. Classic.

Meanwhile, at D23 this past weekend, Square Enix dropped some big news: Kingdom Hearts 4 is officially coming in late 2027, and that date is locked in. Donald Duck will be playable, and characters from Disney's Coco are set to appear. So there's plenty to look forward to.

So, could a movie be next? Bush's comments are vague, but they're enough to keep the dream alive. With the franchise's track record and Disney's love for adaptations, it wouldn't be shocking.
