Remember Golden Axe? No? Well, that's okay—this new animated series might just win you over anyway. Sega's classic beat-'em-up franchise has been dormant for over a decade, but the first trailer for the Golden Axe animated series just dropped, and it's packed with adventure, blood, and a potion-hoarding thief getting the stuffing knocked out of it. Even if you never grew up with the games, this trailer does a great job of showing how the franchise has been revived for TV.
The show brings back the original trio of heroes—Tyris Flare, Ax Battler, and Gilius Thunderhead—voiced by Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Matthew Rhys, respectively. They're on a quest to defeat the evil Death Adder yet again and save the land of Yuria. This time, they're joined by an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer named Hampton Squib, whose dreams far exceed his abilities. Think of him as the comic relief who's in way over his head.
The series is the brainchild of Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad), so you can expect a mix of faithful adaptation and meta-commentary. The trailer hints at this when Tyris Flare quips about facing "a series of progressively harder enemies" before the final showdown with Death Adder. It's that self-aware humor that makes the trailer so appealing, even to newcomers.
Sega has been on a roll bringing its game properties to screens lately. We've got a whole trilogy of Sonic movies (with a fourth on the way), a live-action Yakuza series that debuted in 2024, and upcoming adaptations of Streets of Rage, House of the Dead, and even an OutRun movie directed by Michael Bay (because why not?). Golden Axe is just the latest in this wave of game-to-screen adaptations.
So, even if you've never touched a Golden Axe arcade cabinet, this trailer is worth a watch. It's got action, humor, and a fresh take on a classic franchise. Will you be giving it a shot when it premieres? Let us know your thoughts!
