Nintendo's Latest DMCA Sweep Removes 400+ Switch Emulators from GitHub

Ever tried to find a Switch emulator on GitHub only to hit a dead end? That's happening more and more these days, thanks to Nintendo's relentless legal crusade. This week, the company wiped out over 400 more emulator repositories, and if you're a fan of homebrew or emulation, this is getting serious.

According to a report from TorrentFreak on August 21, Nintendo sent seven DMCA takedown notices to GitHub, targeting Switch emulator repositories. The big fish in this haul? Suyu, the popular Yuzu successor that rose from the ashes after Yuzu was shut down in March 2024. Also caught in the net were Skyline, an Android emulator, and a few lingering Yuzu forks. In total, 401 repositories were nuked, with 311 of them being Suyu alone.

If you try to visit any of these repositories now, you'll either get a 404 error or a pop-up saying it's been taken down. The DMCA notice from Nintendo claims these emulators "offer, link to, or otherwise provide access to Nintendo Switch emulators." But it goes deeper than that. Nintendo argues that these emulators violate Technological Protection Measures (TPMs) – those digital locks that prevent copying. The notice states, "These Nintendo Switch emulators illegally circumvent Nintendo's TPMs in order to run illegal copies of Nintendo Switch games."

Here's the technical bit: Switch games are encrypted with proprietary cryptographic keys (prod.keys). The emulators need to use unauthorized copies of these keys to decrypt ROMs at runtime, which Nintendo says is a big no-no. So, in their eyes, it's not just about the emulator itself, but the whole piracy pipeline.

This isn't a one-off. In May 2024, Nintendo took down over 8,500 repositories. Add that to this week's 401, and we're looking at almost 9,000 repositories removed from GitHub alone. And remember the Yuzu lawsuit? Nintendo filed against Tropic Haze in February 2024, and it was reported that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was pirated over a million times before launch. That's a huge motivator for Nintendo's war on emulation.
